The Pivot: No God But You

Nathan the prophet had just delivered an extraordinary message to King David. David wanted to build a house for God—a permanent temple in which to honor Him. But God had something else in mind. Rather than David building a house for God, God promised to build a house for David, establishing a dynasty through his descendants. Overwhelmed by the generosity of a God who had already given him so much, David sat before the Lord in humble gratitude. “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you.” David had encountered a God whose goodness and faithfulness exceeded anything he could have imagined.

This particular but is a little different from the ones we usually explore. It doesn’t introduce a contrast or a change in direction. Instead, it expresses an exception. There is no God except you. No rival. No equal. No one else who compares. David knew something about earthly power, but he also knew its limitations. His own plans, ambitions, and accomplishments paled beside the greatness of the God he worshiped. And perhaps there’s a reminder here for us, too. We spend so much of life trying to figure out what we can accomplish, what we can build, and how we can make things happen. But sometimes the most remarkable discoveries come when we recognize what God has already done—and what He is doing that we never could have imagined.
