David had a dream. He wanted to build a magnificent temple for the Lord, but God had other plans. In 1 Chronicles 22:7–10, David explains to Solomon that because he had been a man of war, the temple would be built by his son, a man of peace. “But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest…” (v. 9). God wasn’t rejecting David’s dream. He was redirecting it. David would prepare the way, but Solomon would complete the work.
There’s a beautiful reminder here for anyone who’s watched a cherished dream take an unexpected turn. Sometimes a closed door feels like failure or rejection. But God’s purposes are often bigger than our individual assignments.David’s role was no less important because Solomon would finish what he started. Perhaps the grace hiding in this but is the freedom to do our part faithfully and trust God with what comes next. Just because the story unfolds differently than we imagined doesn’t mean God has abandoned the dream—or us.
