The Pivot: But the Lord …

Seen

We live in a world that places enormous value on appearances. We notice how people look, what they’ve accomplished, where they’ve been, what they own, and how others regard them. We make judgments based on what we can see, often without realizing how little we actually know. Samuel nearly made the same mistake when he assumed Jesse’s impressive eldest son must be God’s choice for Israel’s next king. But God saw something Samuel couldn’t. “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

What wonderful hope for those who have spent their lives feeling overlooked, underestimated, or judged by what others see—or think they see. God isn’t impressed by our carefully maintained appearances, nor is He discouraged by the brokenness we try so hard to hide. He sees beyond our circumstances, our reputations, our failures, and the labels others have placed upon us. He sees the heart. And perhaps the greatest comfort in this little but is knowing that we don’t have to convince God to look beyond the surface. He already does.
